Breathe… Music…. Breathe

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Close your eyes…. take a few deep inhalations and exhalations… Do this for a minute before you read on…. ..

Now that you would be more alert and ready; lets talk further.

With the increase in a hurried and to the other extreme; a lethargic lifestyle, the first thing that gets compromised is our breath.

From my observations at my work and my music training sessions, I’ve realised that most of us tend to hold our breath while doing anything that we are unsure of, any new activity where we are nervous or simply while staring at the screen on social media.

In our music lessons I’ve found that students tend to hold their breath while practicing, especially when a new lesson is taught and they want to make it perfect in the first go.

Over a period of time this becomes a natural habit.

This in turn contributes to anxiety disorders, muscle strain, tightness in the spine, and a general sense of unease in the practice sessions giving rise to long term injuries.

That’s why students often find me reminding them to breathe; several times during a lesson.

What happens is, most people begin learning music/any art form to find their calm but end up having yet another stressful activity on their plate.

Ironically it is very important to breathe well and soft, without jerks in your practice hours of whatever that you pursue. Only then will you be rightly focused, able to grasp better and remember the minute details.

Your muscles remain soft, your throat is passive and you begin to observe the gaps of silence in the music you play. Once you learn to wait calmly in these gaps, only now will you be ready to enter the ocean of music.

Until then; everything else that we do is only preparation.

So the next time you pick up an instrument to practice; or indulge into your chosen Art form; keep a big flash card in front of you; saying: “Breathe….”

“Breathe” the life force/energy in and express it out as Beautiful Music!
